Thomas Mason Blue Poplin 120s Fine Bengal Stripe

Downing takes its name from the street in Westminster, and the stripes match it: single colours on white, clear and confident rather than muted. The cloth is a two-ply 120s warp against a single 70s weft, which gives it more body than a poplin that runs 120s both ways, and a slight lustre across the surface.

The stripe is narrow and evenly spaced, a fine band of blue on white. It sits a step below a bengal in width, which is where the name comes from. At 119 to 127 grams it has enough weight to hold a collar.

Often ordered with a spread or point collar. A button-down collar works as well and reads as more casual.

Each shirt is cut by hand to your measurements. You choose between two constructions. The first has three operations worked by hand: the armholes, the buttons and the gusset at the base of the side seam. The second adds three more: the collar attached by hand, the buttonholes hand-sewn and the bartacks at the sleeve sewn by hand. Both are finished with Australian mother-of-pearl buttons.
