A closer look at how our garments are made
Roots in Bespoke Tailoring
Besnard has its roots in bespoke tailoring, and tailoring is still the core of the house. We make garments to be worn often and kept for a long time, and that starts with fit, cloth and construction.
Most of our garments are made in Italy, by partners we have worked with for years, each specialised in one kind of garment. Much of what these makers know was learned from the generation before them, and working with them helps keep that knowledge in use.
Tailoring
Our tailoring is made in Italy using a full canvas construction. The canvas is sewn onto the cloth, then pressed with heat and steam to shape the chest and form the lapel roll. It is slow work, and it depends on the experience of the person doing it, because it turns flat cloth into something with shape and movement.
Over time, the jacket adapts to the wearer, offering both structure and comfort. The collar, armholes and buttonholes are all sewn by hand, the buttonholes in silk yarn, which keeps them neat and tight over years of wear.
Trousers
Each pair of trousers is tailored in an Italian workshop dedicated exclusively to trouser making, using patterns we have refined over many years. Paper patterns are laid on the cloth and marked with chalk before each piece is cut by hand.
Our trousers combine traditional sartorial details with everyday function. These include a curtained waistband to conceal internal seams, a button fly, an after-dinner split for ease of movement, and pick stitching along the fly and pockets.
Shirts
Our shirts are cut by hand and partly sewn by hand. With made-to-measure, you choose the construction, with up to six operations worked by hand, and the shirt is finished with Australian mother-of-pearl buttons.
